Bimetallism

« Back to Glossary Index

Monetary system in which a nation defines the value of its currency based on specific quantities of two precious metals (gold and silver). This country agrees to exchange any amount of paper money for the equivalent amounts of either metal. The amount of money that can be put into circulation is also dependent on the reserves of these metals. Most countries no longer use this standard, with fiat money being the most common.
